In a significant step in strengthening Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) assessment, the Goa government has adopted Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to evaluate the learning progress of Grade I and II students.
The AI technology will assess the students under National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy (NIPUN) Bharat goal, which aims at enhancing learning outcomes at foundational stages.
The Goa Samagra Shiksha through its initiatives under Vidya Samiksha Kendra (VSK) and the NIPUN Cell, in collaboration with SCERT and ConveGenius, has launched the NIPUN assessment of students which is live from February 17 to March 1, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of student learning and guiding future educational strategies.
“A key highlight of this initiative is the interactive dashboards, which allow all stakeholders — teachers, school leaders, and policymakers — to access and analyze assessment data in real-time. This data-driven decision-making approach fosters continuous improvement in student learning across Goa’s education system,” the government said in a press statement issued on Thursday.
SCERT, in partnership with ConveGenius Digital Pvt Ltd, has developed and vetted NIPUN assessment questions to ensure alignment with FLN skills. The survey questions have been made available in English, Marathi and Konkani to ensure wider coverage.
“The NIPUN Goa chatbot, powered by SwiftChat, comprises 20 AI-driven questions each for Mathematics and English for Grades 1 and 2, mapped directly to FLN competencies. By integrating AI chatbot technology, VSK is digitally recording student responses, eliminating manual data entry, ensuring accurate real-time data collection, and providing instant insights for targeted interventions,” the government said.
SCERT is also conducting workshops for teachers in phase manner. So far, four workshops have been successfully conducted this month, with more sessions scheduled on February 21, 24, and 28.
