An all-Goa singing competition was organised by St Matevachim Nokhetram (SMN) at Azossim on September 22.

Songitachi Sanz, a cultural programme that provided three hours of entertainment, was organised in collaboration with Directorate of Art and Culture and 24 singers participated in the contest.

In junior category, Hale Rodrigues (Colva), Deetya Shirwaiker (Quepem) and Joshua Pereira (Agassaim) were declared the first, second and third prizes winners respectively.

In the senior category, Dr Rynell Rodrigues (Curchorem), Alvita Dias (Betalbatim) and Andrea Rego (Ponda) bagged the first, second and third prizes respectively.

The music was provided by Senon & his Big Band comprising Senon DeSouza (first trumpet), Nolvert Cota (second trumpet), Sammy Braganza (trombone), Norman Cardoso (keyboard), John Fernandes (drums), Nevil Cardoso (rhythm guitar) and Cannon Dsouza (bass guitar).

Spectators got a bonus in the form of two popular songs ‘Mira Mira’ and ‘Ago Chedva’ by chief guest and well-known singer, Seby Fernandes, who performed his own hits for them during his address to the crowd.

With a voice still amazing for his age, the singer from Curtorim proudly said he will speak in Saxtti Konkani.

“Konkani has been kept alive by priests, tiatrists and others,” he said.

The show was compered by Joel Ribeiro and Craby Fernandes with witty and humorous comments and interludes. A singer, Wilma Lopes, was the judge along with Panaji-based musician Domingos Fernandes. Dean of Goa Velha Deanery Canon Fr Alfred Vas was the guest of honour.

SMN President Agnelo DCunha welcomed the gathering, while Melba D’Cunha introduced the judges, and Dr Shamin Pereira, SMN secretary proposed a vote of thanks.
