Area behind old fish market turns into dump for dry waste

MARGAO
Guess the status of the old fish market area behind the Margao Municipal building where the civic body has now proposed a multi-level parking lot at an estimated cost of Rs 10-odd crore.

A visit to the area revealed that the entire area is being used for open dumping of dry waste when the Municipality had banned open waste dumping at Sonsodo over a decade ago.

The site plays host to coconut shells and husk and a mound of plastic dry waste, raising questions whether the civic body had at any time drew attention of the High Court how the site is being used for dry waste dumping.

As a mound of coconut shells and husk welcomes visitors to the old fish market site, questions are raised whether the civic body has looked out for options how to dispose of the increasing waste in the commercial capital.

Similarly, questions are being asked in city circles how come plastic dry waste has accumulated at the old fish market area when the civic body has announced that baling of dry waste has started at the Nessai Industrial Estate, besides Sonsodo.
