A man from Bengaluru has been booked by Porvorim police on charges of cheating a woman from Porvorim to tune of Rs 9.68 lakh on the pretext of providing a Canada visa to her daughter for her studies abroad.

According to police reports, the incident took place between sometime between August and September 2024, when the complainant, a manager at a casino, happened to meet the accused, B P Manikanta, who would visit the casino.

The complainant then mentioned to Manikanta that she wanted to send her daughter to Canada for further education. At that time, Manikanta is reported to have promised the complainant that he would obtain a visa for her daughter’s education.

The woman later transferred an amount of Rs 9,68,470 to the bank accounts provided by the accused during the above period.

When the woman did not receive the visa, she tried to get in touch with Manikanta, but he stopped visiting the casino and could not be contacted.

Realising that she had been cheated, she then filed a complaint at the Porvorim police station.

Porvorim police registered a case against Manikanta and further investigation is being conducted by PSI Sachin Shirodkar under the guidance of Police Inspector Rahul Parab.
