Noted Konkani writer, Damodar Mauzo has called for enacting a law mandating prior permission from the police before holding any protests.

He also demanded that the authorities should also fix timings for groups to hold protests to avert law and order situation.

Addressing the gathering of citizens of Goa at the meeting called to condemn the Bajrang Dal protests at the residence of writer Uday Bhembre, Mauzo expressed his doubt whether there exist law and order in the State. “There is a need to bring a law mandating anyone from taking prior police protection before holding protests. The law should also ensure that the protests are allowed during specified timings,” he said.

Saying those who participated in the protest at Bhembre’s residence are not Niz Goemkars, Mauzo pointed out that a Goan would have maintained a level before addressing anyone. “I feel pity for them. But, what the police have done is shocking. We would all like to know who is behind the police inaction. The Constitution guarantees every right of liberty for speech and expression with responsibility, besides fraternity and equality,” he said.

Saying that he is optimistic that the government will initiate action, Mauzo said the government should arrest the perpetrators.

Dakshinayan Abhiyan flays attack on freedom of speech

MARGAO: The Goa unit of Dakshinayan Abhiyan (DA) has condemned the unwarranted attack on freedom of speech.
Without going into the merits of the debate on Shivaji, the DA said it stands firmly with Adv Uday Bhembre’s right to his viewpoints and to express them on all social media platforms. “The Constitution of India protects his right of speech and expression. What Uday Bhembre said is not hate speech, his was a viewpoint contrary to the one stated by the Chief Minister. The Bajrang Dal is only emboldened by the government’s patronage at times when they take law in their own hands in moral policing and other activities which are in the domain of the State power,” stated Cleofato Almeida Coutinho.
Demanding immediate police action in controlling such elements, the DA has said immediate action is required so that liberal voices are not silenced by hooligans who cannot act without the blessings of the government.

Cong MLA warns of public distrust if police fail to act

MARGAO: Congress Aldona MLA Adv Carlos Alvares has said that if no action is forthcoming from the police, people would tend to believe that it is the hand of the government that is working behind the scenes to foment divisions between the people to create some law and order, probably for politics.
Saying there should not be politics in such matters, MLA Carlos said he believes that Goans would stand together and rise to the occasion to show what is meant to be a Goan.
He told the media that the issue will have to be taken up in the forthcoming session of the Goa Legislative Assembly. “These are matters of law and order and we will definitely include it in our discussions in the ensuing Assembly session,” he added.
