PANAJI:
Leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao on Thursday expressed alarm at the rate of fatalities on Goa's roads in the face of recent accidents and hit out at the BJP government calling it "insensitive" to the deaths, many a times youth.
"The BJP government has failed to prevent road accidents. More than 1,300 people have died on the State's roads in the last six years, many among them youth," Alemao said.
Alemao, who was reacting to fatal accidents reported over the last few days, said that the "insensitive BJP government" is busy diverting pressing issues by raising the bogie of religion and caste instead.
"It is alarming to see people dying in road accidents at an alarming rate, yet this government seems insensitive to the issue,” he said.
He said that in 2023, Union minister Nitin Gadkari had announced funds worth Rs 100 crore for Goa to remove black spots and to improve road safety but the government has failed in this task.
“The government should make it public if they have removed these black spots on Goa's roads," Alemao said.
He said, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had on several occasions promised to mend potholes but there are several roads with potholes which are one of the causes for road accidents.
"Jet patcher machines brought to mend these potholes and Whatsapp service to report potholes are non-operational,” Alemao said, adding that there is an urgent need to put in place effective measures to ensure road safety and hold those responsible accountable.
