As the Lok Sabha prepares for a heated debate on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill on Wednesday, the BJP State Core Committee has decided to create awareness regarding the Bill among the Muslim community through Block Presidents.
Sources told The Goan that in the meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, attended by ministers and MLAs, it was discussed that areas with a significant Muslim population would be prioritized to ensure there is no opposition to the Bill.
“The benefits of this Bill will be explained to Block Presidents and General Secretaries, who will then reach out to the community. We need their support during the Bill’s passage in Parliament,” sources said.
The Bill that has already met strong resistance from opposition parties, will be introduced immediately after Question Hour, followed by eight hours of discussion. Minorities Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju will present the Bill in the House and push for its passage.
At the BAC meeting, the opposition had sought 12 hours for debate but the government insisted on a shorter duration, citing the need to discuss a statutory resolution against the imposition of central rule in Manipur.
