The ‘Old Monk Tandoori Chai,’ a viral sensation that has been drawing attention on social media, might no longer be served at Café Aguada as the “popular video” showcasing the making of this drink caught the eye of the Excise officials, prompting them to raid the premises and take action. The Mapusa excise officials found the Café illegally sold the liquor.
A case has been booked under Section 9 of the Goa Excise Duty Act and Rules, 1964. In the viral video, the man behind the counter is seen pouring rum as he prepares the tandoori chai; all while being recorded by a curious woman tourist. Another visitor can be heard inquiring whether the concoction can be ordered for takeout.
The Goan contacted Mapusa Excise Inspector Rajesh Naik, who confirmed action against the Café stating, “We have booked a case against the accused Saniel Balgal, and are in the process of recording statements of all the concerned. A report will be submitted to the Commissioner, for further action.” The report is expected this week followed by show cause notice to the Cafe.
As per the prima facie details, Old Monk Rum was stored and used for preparing the alcoholic tea and coffee, which were sold to customers most of whom were tourists.
The video, on the other hand, has received mixed responses from social media users, with some having already tasted the alcoholic beverage.
“I tried this and it is (fire). Must try. This guy making and serving it also has his own style. Good experience,” one Nishad Umarani expressed on 'X' social media handle. Another Aadi Shah criticized saying, “Chai ke naam pe Kuch bhi chal raha hai (anything in the name of tea).”
“Cheez nahi dala bhai (did you not add cheese?), “Old monk hi peelo chai ke naam kyu kharab kar rahe (why include Old Monk in it? Its spoiling reputation of tea), “kuch bhi (anything), were some of the sarcastic comments while another X user questioned, “License?”
