Villagers in Calangute have called on authorities to halt ongoing development projects following concerns over the fate of a replanted banyan tree.
Led by the Calangute Constituency Forum (CCF), the villagers have written to the Calangute panchayat and other relevant authorities, alleging that the developers of two projects in the vicinity are conspiring to harm the tree situated in Khobravaddo, Calangute.
They have requested that occupancy certificates for these projects not be issued.
“This iconic symbol of our community holds immense cultural, historical, and environmental significance, and it would be a grave mistake to allow its destruction,” said Premanand Diukar, President of the CCF.
Diukar criticised the developers’ actions, citing initial attempts to cut the tree’s roots and the recent installation of metal fencing around the tree, which he claims jeopardises the tree’s health and integrity.
The banyan tree is not only a significant historical and cultural landmark but also provides essential environmental benefits, such as mitigating air pollution and preserving biodiversity.
“The initiative of the developer to initially cut the roots of the tree and now cover the area of the replanted banyan tree with metal fencing not only jeopardises the health and integrity of the tree but also disregards the sentiments of the community,” Diukar added.
Local residents emphasise the tree’s importance as a witness to generations, providing shade, shelter, and a sense of belonging. They argue that its loss would be irreplaceable, leaving a void in both the environment and the hearts of the community.
“We implore you to recognise the value of the banyan tree beyond its aesthetic appeal. It plays a crucial role in mitigating air pollution, preserving biodiversity, and enhancing the overall well-being of our community,” the villagers stated in their appeal to the authorities.
They demand that the area covered by the developer with metal sheets be freed and opened for immediate supervision and maintenance of the tree.
