The Canacona excise team on Tuesday confiscated whiskey and beer bottles from a forested area of Loliem-Polem bordering Karwar, which was apparently being smuggled into Karnataka to influence elections on Wednesday.
The seized 48 bottles of whisky and 24 tins of beer all valued at Rs 23,280 were found hidden in the forest area of Loliem near the Karnataka-Goa state border.
According to excise sources, a Flying Squad team headed by Canacona Superintendent of Excise Chandranath Dessai raided the area after a specific information was received about some elements trying to smuggle liquor consignment through the forest cover.
When the excise team reached searched the area at about 5.45 pm on Tuesday, 48 bottles of whisky and 24 tins of beer valued at Rs 23,280 were found abandoned in the jungle of Loliem and the alleged smugglers fled the site.
“Two persons carrying the liquor fled in the thick jungle on seeing the excise officials and could not located despite a search in the forest area,” informed a source from the Canacona Excise.
