In a major step towards safeguarding women’s health, 100 underprivileged girls aged 13–19 were given the free HPV vaccine at a drive jointly organised by the Rotary Club of Panaji and One World Goa. Held at the Panaji Community Centre, the event also included awareness sessions on cervical cancer and its prevention. A second dose of the vaccine will be administered on October 25 at Hotel Manoshanti.
Dr Vandana Dhume, project director of the Goa AIDS Society, explained the importance of the HPV vaccine in reducing the risk of cervical cancer. “Prevention is better than treatment, and this vaccine offers crucial protection,” she said.
Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant also stressed the vaccine’s safety and effectiveness. “It is approved by the Government of India and will soon be part of the national immunisation programme,” he said. He added that the vaccine is 99.9% effective in preventing cervical cancer, which causes not only health issues but also loss of money and time.
Sawant also highlighted the need for a healthy lifestyle. “Good diet, exercise, and awareness are key. Avoid junk food and be conscious of what you eat,” he advised. Drawing a comparison to vaccines like BCG and polio, he said cervical cancer could similarly be prevented through immunisation. “We no longer see young polio patients because of widespread vaccination. The same can be true for cervical cancer,” he said.
He encouraged Goans to adopt a healthy lifestyle and take part in the Prime Minister’s Fit India Mission. “Like Clean India, this mission focuses on fitness. Yoga is now practised globally, including in countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan. Goa should lead by example,” he said.
Rotary Club of Panaji President Dr Raghuvir Salkar said, “We aim to empower girls with both knowledge and protection through this joint initiative.” Educational sessions on cervical cancer causes, symptoms and prevention will accompany the vaccination campaign.
The event was attended by several dignitaries and sponsors, including gynaecologist Dr Sajal Dhond, Dr Kedar Padte, members of the Rotary Club, and representatives from supporting organisations like Bagkiya Constructions and Mathias Properties.
This initiative marks a meaningful effort to protect young girls and promote awareness about cervical cancer prevention in Goa.
