Panchayats Minister Mauvin Godinho on Friday said phase two of the Jogger’s Park in Chicalim would be inaugurated by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on December 17.

Godinho made the announcement after launching a new night soil tanker procured by the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) in the presence of Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar, MMC Chairperson Girish Borker and others.

Godinho said that the new soil tanker procured by the MMC would resolve the sewage issue, especially sewage flowing into the sea.

“MMC earlier had a night soil tanker of 3,000 litres but now they have a new tanker of 6,000 litres capacity. We have two night soil tankers in Dabolim which have also been instructed to attend to any distress calls across the Taluka and not restrict to Dabolim.”

“These trucks can carry the sewage to our Wealth out of waste (WooW) sewage treatment plant in Dabolim, where we can convert it and use it to water the gardens in Jogger’s Park. We are getting around 60,000 litres but our requirements are around 1,00,000 litres per day where we are saving potable water and converting waste to wealth.”

Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar said that the facility was the need of the hour and would serve the entire Mormugao Taluka.

“The cost of the new night soil tanker is around Rs 54 lakh, and this will resolve the sewage issues and also help clear septic tanks of the people. In the past we would have to request for night soil tankers from Dabolim constituency through Mauvin Godinho, but now the MMC had got its own vehicle that must be put to best use,” said Salkar.

MMC Chairperson Girish Borker said it had been two years that the MMC night soil tanker had been scrapped.

"The people faced a lot of inconvenience because we did not have proper night soil tankers but with this new tanker maximum sewage issue will be resolved. We are thankful to Godinho because he has given MMC the permission to discharge sewage in the WooW plant when the PWD sewage treatment plant in Baina is non-functional so that sewage is not discharged in the seas. We will provide a better rate and cheaper than the market rate for the people availing this facility through the MMC," said Borker.
