Come Wednesday, and Chinchinim village will usher in a movement in a bid to bring large tracts of fallow agricultural land back into cultivation.

An initiative of the comunidade of Chinchinim and its president Agnelo Furtado, supported by the local Velim MLA Cruz Silva, around 170 hectares of fallow land will be brought under paddy cultivation on Tuesday.

Furtado informed that the initiative will be formally launched by transplanting fields at the Diguam Band on Wednesday morning.

“Presently, more than 40 farmers have evinced interest in reviving agriculture. We will soon go in for community farming. Most of the land has been lying fallow for a decade now. Only around three farmers have been engaged in agriculture for the last three years,” he said.

The comunidade has roped in Fr George Quadros of Don Bosco Society, Loutolim and his team with the latest four-wheel-drive Kubota tractors and transplanters, besides an agriculture drone for fertilizers.

“With the help of Fr Quadros, who is known as the paddy Man of Goa, we have drawn up a plan to revive agriculture in Chinchinim humbly and modestly, beginning from Wednesday,” Furtado added.

The initiative includes erecting a long fence to keep the stray cattle at bay.

“Large herds of cattle, believed to be from Cuncolim, descend in Chinchinim destroying paddy. The fencing will take care of the stray cattle. But, we have also left a large area unfenced for the cattle to graze,” he added.
