Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira on Friday said there should not be any problem to clean the River Sal, the lifeline of Salcete, if the government of India can clean up the river Ganga from pollution.
He said the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) is constantly monitoring the water discharged by the sewage treatment plants set up in Margao to treat sewage generated in the commercial capital.
The Minister made the comment when the media during his attention at the Friday darbar that while it has been a proud moment that waters from the River Sal were collected by the Defence establishment to carry the same to the National War Memorial, New Delhi on Republic Day, the river is polluted by the rampant discharge of sewage.
When asked whether there’s any delay by the government agency to implement the action plan to rejuvenate the River Sal, the Minister said the GSPCB is monitoring the situation from time to time. “There have been certain issues in the past vis-à-vis the sewage treatment plants. Hence, the GSPCB is closely monitoring the situation to ensure there is no pollution,” he said.
The Environment Minister tried to downplay the rampant discharge of sewage from Margao and Fatorda into the River Sal, contaminating the river, by saying that the government is on the job to fix the sewage issues plaguing the commercial capital.
