Chief Minister Pramod Sawant stated that water is an expensive resource, costing the government Rs 22 to produce just 1 cubic metre of potable water.

However, the state government supplies it free of charge to consumers who use less than 16 cubic metres. For those who consume more than 16 cubic metres, the government charges only Rs 3.07 per cubic metre, and Rs 7 per cubic metre for commercial use.

Sawant emphasised that everyone should use water wisely and avoid wastage.

He was speaking at Alto-Pilerne, where he laid the foundation stone for the construction of a 650 cubic metre overhead water tank. The ceremony was attended by Saligao MLA Kedar Naik, ZP member Sandeep Bandodkar, Sarpanch of Pilerne-Marra Panchayat Reshma Bandodkar, Dy Sarpanch Amarnath Govekar, and Panch members from Pilerne-Marra, Reis Magos, Nerul, Saligao, and Sangolda panchayats.

Sawant also encouraged panchayats to lease land from Communidade and the government for activities such as horticulture, floriculture, pisciculture, agriculture, and dairy farming, helping Goa become self-reliant. He praised Pilerne for starting horticulture activities and urged other panchayats in the Saligao constituency to follow their example. Additionally, Sawant suggested that panchayats consider opening training centres to help local youth develop skills and become self-sufficient.

The 650 cubic metre overhead water tank being constructed in Alto-Pilerne will cost Rs 7.50 crore, with completion expected within one year. It will provide water to about 15,000 people.

Saligao MLA Kedar Naik explained that residents of Alto-Pilerne, located at a higher altitude, had long struggled with water shortages, often having to purchase water at high costs. The overhead water tank, a long-standing demand, will resolve this issue, ensuring a steady water supply. He also mentioned upcoming projects, including the construction of a Panchayat Ghar and community hall, as well as the near completion of underground electric cables and the ongoing work on a new sub-power station in Pilerne.

During the event, helmets were distributed to college students residing in the Pilerne-Marra panchayat area. Aishwarya Nair hosted the programme and proposed the vote of thanks.
