PANAJI: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant emphasized the vital role of leadership and self-awareness in shaping students' futures, urging them to identify their passions and strengths when choosing their careers. Addressing an event marking the historic collaboration between the Government of Goa and Harvard University, Sawant stated, “Leadership is essential in every field. Students should not only learn academic knowledge but also leadership qualities, which are taught by both parents and teachers.”

The Harvard Leadership Program, aimed at high school students and teachers from Goa, marks a new chapter in the state's educational journey. The initiative, designed to benefit underprivileged students, aligns with the National Education Policy 2020 and emphasizes inclusive education. “For the first time, a program of such a global standard is being conducted for high school students and teachers in Goa,” Sawant said.

The program, which involves Harvard University mentors, Goan college student instructors, and high school participants, focuses on developing leadership, critical thinking, and scientific skills. The curriculum, rooted in liberal arts and sciences, seeks to bridge the gaps in Goa's education system, where students often specialize in one field after grade 10.

“Students will gain exposure to knowledge that goes beyond the regular classroom and will be equipped with essential life skills,” said Sawant, highlighting the program’s emphasis on personal attention with a 20:1 student-to-instructor ratio.

A total of 100 high-performing underprivileged students are participating in this residential program, which takes place at the Pilgrim Centre in Goa. Forty teachers are also undergoing educational training to further strengthen the state's educational ecosystem.

The CM highlighted the broader goals of this initiative, which include increasing Goa’s enrollment ratio in higher education and aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. “Investing in programs like PSL helps build human capital, which drives economic growth,” Sawant said.

In addition to improving education, the program is opening doors to better opportunities for Goa's students, including opportunities at Harvard University, which offers 100% financial aid for those in need. “One of the myths this program seeks to dispel is that institutions like Harvard are only for the privileged,” he added.

Looking ahead, Sawant expressed hopes of further supporting Goan students in attending global educational programs like Harvard’s Summer School. “We remain focused on improving education standards, promoting skill development, and ensuring universal access to education,” he concluded.
