Asserting that maximum crimes in the State are committed by people from outside Goa, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant directed police to ensure 100 per cent tenant verification and to impose strict vigil and check on migrants arriving in the State via trains.

Sawant on Sunday held a security review meeting with top officials of Goa police that included Director General of Police and Superintendent of Police. During the meeting, the Chief Minister raised concern about Goa being used for organized crimes like that of betting, online fraud and drug trade.

Sawant, who also holds Home Portfolio, made it clear that all police officers in the rank of inspectors and below, who have been in one location for three or more years, would be transferred immediately and that the police inspector, should station himself along with the family, if required, within the posted jurisdiction and will not be allowed to leave the area, henceforth.

Speaking to media persons post meeting, he said that police are directed to ensure 100 per cent mandatory tenant verification from October 1-10, and those failing to submit the forms, should be fined Rs 10,000. He said that Labour Contractor will have to register himself along with the list of his workers, with the State labour department, failing which he would be debarred from working in any industrial estate.

“Goa being a coastal State…with lot of fishing activities taking place and increasing presence of migrants cum labourers, calls for mandatory tenant verification. If you see the record, maximum crimes are committed by non-Goans. This needs to be controlled. Directions have been issued to the police,” he said adding police are directed to keep check on entry and exit points of migrants and also maintain vigil at railway stations.

Sawant said that Goa is becoming a set target for organized crimes like cyber fraud, betting, drugs, etc and it is important that police take some serious steps. He also appealed to citizens not to fall prey to money-doubling scams.

“There are specific people involved in such crime…we have identified some common offenders…list is prepared for their externment,” he said.

Henceforth, 20 per cent police force will be deployed on night duty, he maintained.

In another decision, directions have been issued to vacate all those road-side vendors, who are involved in carrying out business activities illegally.

Meanwhile, responding to a question on ongoing controversy over authority rejection permission to hold Julus in Canacona, Sawant said that permissions are granted or rejected for public processions, functions or events based on the prevailing situation and their impact on law and order. “Be it Julus or any other event, DGP and PIs take the right decision based on the situation and as per law,” he said.
