MAPUSA
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday cold-shouldered the prospect of holding early elections to the State assembly and stated that the polls would be held on time in February 2022.

“Elections to the State assembly will be held on time which tentatively will be in the month of February 2022,” Sawant said.

The chief minister, who was on a visit to a Covid-19 vaccination centre in Mapusa, was responding to a query of a journalist whether the State was heading for an early election.

Mapusa MLA Joshua D’Souza was also present.

Sawant said his government, which enjoyed a clear majority in the State, was cruising along and would complete the entire term of the Goa Legislative

Assembly.

“We enjoy a clear majority in the assembly. There is no question of holding early elections. The government will carry out a lot of development works in the remaining six months,” he said.

The arrival of the national BJP General Secretary (organisation) B L Santosh had set the buzz that the State BJP was getting into the

election mode.

Sources in the BJP had confided with this paper that the elections could be preponed by a month or two.

The chief minister informed that the Tika Utsav 3.0 vaccination programme was getting good response in the entire State.

He said on the first day 16,000 plus and on the second day 14,000 plus youth in the age group of 18-44 took the jabs, while 18,505 were vaccinated on Tuesday.

“We are getting an excellent response to the vaccination programme. The government has set a target of completing 100 percent vaccination of the first dose. If people cooperate then we will definitely achieve the target,” Sawant said.

“If we have to fight against the Covid, then vaccination is the only answer,”

he added.

He appealed to people to come out and participate in the vaccination programme on the marked days at various centres from Pernem to Canacona.
