Colva police nab Delhi native in Rs 3.86 lakh cybercrime case

MARGAO
South Goa Superintendent of Police, Sunita Sawant on Friday made a fervent plea to the people not to fall prey to cybercrimes, even as the Colva police nabbed a native of Delhi, Tushar Bansal in the Rs 3.86 lakh crime.

Even as the Colva police have brought Bansal to Goa after arresting him in Mumbai, SP Sawant said people should be alert to foil the machinations of the cybercrime criminals. “While dealing with online websites, use them cautiously. Don’t share the OTP on e-mails,” she said.

She said a cybercrime unit has been set up at the South Goa district police headquarters, to assists all the police stations in the district in cyber fraud cases. “Cases involving less than Rs five lakh, investigations in cybercrime cases is being handled by the local police stations. In cases when the amount exceeds Rs five lakh, investigations is handed over to the Cybercrime police station, Ribandar,” she said.

In the instant case, SP Sawant pointed out that the Colva police had received a complaint from Dr Ashley Fernandes stating officials of a courier service company, being the shipping company took the shipping consignment of four tickets booked by him from Viagogo online website for Coldplay concert for an amount of Rs 3,86,217.84.

He, however, stated the courier service company failed to deliver the same to him and delivered the same consignment to accused No. 2. i.e. Tushar Bansal without any verification, thereby cheating the complainant to the tune of Rs 3,86,217.84.

Giving details of the investigations, SP Sawant said the police used technical surveillance and sent a team to Mumbai which managed to nab Bansal, a native of North West Delhi.

She said the courier company shipped the tickets to Navelim instead of Colva and were allegedly collected by Bansal. “Our investigations revealed that Bansal used to send the consignment and collect the same by himself by travelling on train between Goa and Mumbai,” she said.

Even as Bansal has been remanded to five days police custody by a Margao Court, SP Sawant said the Colva police are investigating the role played by more accused persons in the crime.
