With no sign of the Tourism Department clearing sand deposited at the Colva beach square, the Colva village panchayat has begun the exercise to remove the sand causing accidents.

Last time, the Colva panchayat had spent a whopping Rs 40,000 on the work of lifting away the sand deposited at the beach square. However, the panchayat is back again on the job to clear the sand since the Tourism Department has not shown interest in keeping the beach square free from sand.

Sand depositing at the Colva beach square is a routine affair with winds bringing sand on the square. Repeated pleas by the panchayat body to the Tourism Department to take up the maintenance of the beach square has gone abegging.

Sources in the panchayat body said the panchayat cannot go on spending this huge amount on cleaning the beach square of the sand deposits, fearing that the auditor may raise queries over the spending. “We hope the Tourism Department will intervene in the matter in the future,” remarked a panchayat member.
