Serves ultimatum to authorities to take corrective measures
CANACONA
Alleging rampant corruption at the Polem check post, the Canacona Congress has petitioned the government for the second time in six months to install CCTV cameras and a weighbridge at southern most border Goa's check post with Karnataka.
Alleging that some of department's counters are involved in corruption at Polem, Canacona Congress, including Youth Congress and Jansena Warriors, have reiterated demands to install CCTVs to focus on all counters, including those of the Excise, RTO, FDA and forest department.
Goa Pradesh Youth Congress Vice President Vaishnav Pednekar who along with other youth after submitting memorandum to Canacona Dy Collector Ramesh Gaonkar, told reporters that BJP’s boast of Zero Tolerance to Corruption was merely to hoodwink people and it was not serious about eradicating corruption.
"If they were serious about eradicating corruption then they would have installed CCTVs at Polem check post," Pednekar said.
In a fresh memorandum submitted to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and other departments concerned, Pednekar said they had given detailed information in their previous memorandum submitted on August 19, 2022, on how different government officials posted at Polem check post are involved in corruption and we had demanded a check on these illegalities.
“Around 70 to 100 vehicles enter Goa from different southern states via Polem check-post on a daily basis. But most of them go unchecked for reasons best known to officials. If the government is serious about the health of people then it should check perishable food items entering the State and also should check if fish is formalin laced or not,” Pednekar demanded.
Recalling incidents of some officials involved in taking bribes at Polem check-post were suspended in the past, Pednekar claimed that such corrupt practices are still prevalent and said the government should stop this corruption.
Pednekar also said there are many instances where Karnataka excise officials have seized trucks laden with alcohol, after passing through Goa check post.
“How do such things happen? Is it without the blessings of these officials posted at check post and with such corrupt practices the state is losing its revenue, which needs to be fixed by taking measures” he questioned.
“We are now giving an ultimatum of January 20 to government authorities to fulfil various demands made by us, otherwise we will take appropriate steps to wipe out corruption from Polem Check Post,” he said.
He has also demanded the installation and operation of a weighbridge at the check post and a proper laboratory to check the quality of fish, fruits and vegetables entering the State.
