Canacona Councillor Shubham Komarpant has called for the immediate closure of scrap yards across the municipality.

Komarpant submitted a memorandum to Canacona Municipal Council Chief Officer Laximikant Dessai stating that in mid-June last year, the Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) had resolved to shut down nine scrap yards located within residential areas, citing environmental and safety concerns.

This action follows public outcry and government notices urging compliance with regulations regarding scrap yard operations in the area.

Accordingly, notices were served and CMC in the first week of December 2024 had declared that 11 scrap yards were either demolished or removed.

However, Komarpant claimed that none of the scrapyards have been removed in reality and all 11 scrapyards continue to operate illegally.

“In fact, the number of illegal scrap yards have increased. In my ward itself, one scrapyard had been operating, and an additional one has come up,”stated Komarpant.

Shubham further informed that despite various complaints by one of his colleagues, no action has been taken in the past.

“These scrap yards are creating a nuisance in society, Canacona is an international tourism hub and these scrapyards are ruining our beautiful image,” he said.

Komarpant further informed that CMC Chief Officer Laximikant Dessai who visits twice a week to CMC has assured to take strict action as early as possible, and close down the illegally operated scrap yards for good.

Komarpant also submitted a memorandum to the office of Canacona Dy Collector demanding strict action on scrapyards.
