Water Resources Minister Subhash Shirodkar has emphasised the need to protect and preserve water bodies like Cunchelim spring for future generations, announcing that the government will prioritise its development.

During an inspection of the site on Monday, Shirodkar revealed that the Water Resources Department (WRD) has prepared an estimate of Rs 5 crore for desilting and reconstructing the nullahs that channel water near the spring.

The project includes constructing retaining walls on both sides of the nullah to facilitate proper water flow.

The rivulet, originating from Acoi in Mapusa, meanders through Cunchelim, Karrasvaddo and Duler before merging with the Siolim river.

The restoration work, which is set to be executed in phases, will begin with the repair and desilting of the nullahs along this stretch, followed by the rejuvenation of the Cunchelim spring.

“The first phase will focus on repairing and desilting the nullahs, while the second phase will concentrate on revitalising the Cunchelim spring,” Shirodkar stated.

The minister was accompanied by Mapusa MLA Joshua D’Souza, WRD Chief Engineer Pramod Badami, and other officials during the inspection.
