Delhi tourist remanded to 4-day police custody in Mandrem hit-and-run case

PANAJI: The JMFC Pernem has remanded Delhi tourist Deepan Rajeev Batra (23) to four days in police custody in connection with the murder of an elderly woman, in a hit-and-run case, last Saturday.

The youth is charged with allegedly deliberately running over 65-year-old Marie Feliz Fernandes at Junaswada-Mandrem. He has been booked on charges of murder and other offences.

According to Superintendent of Police (North Goa) Akshat Kaushal, the incident stemmed from a dispute over a pet dog. "Initial investigation revealed that while the accused was on a walk with his parents, he got into a verbal altercation with the victim’s son, who objected to the dog being walked close to the victim’s house. Soon, the arguments turned physical, and blows were exchanged between both sides," he said.

The altercation left both parties injured, with Batra reportedly sustaining bite marks on his hand. After the fight, he allegedly got into his car with his parents and deliberately hit Fernandes while she was trying to place a chair outside her home, SP Kaushal added.

Fernandes later succumbed to her injuries. Batra is a resident of Paschim Vihar, Delhi, and temporarily staying at a guesthouse in Sawantwada-Mandrem.
