The Water Resources Department has undertaken the task of desilting all the bandharas in the Sattari rivers. It has been pointed out that this will reduce chances of flooding this year.
Bandharas have been constructed on almost all the rivers in Sattari taluka at a cost of about Rs 120 crores. This has increased the ground water level in Sattari taluka and has had a favourable effect on the agricultural development of Sattari taluka.
However, with the construction of bandharas, the silt accumulated in them has been neglected. Due to this, Sattari taluka had to face frequent flood situation.
According to the information emphasis has been laid on desilting of bandharas in all the rivers Mhadai, Valvanti Ragada and Velus in Sattari taluka.
This will reduce the risk of floods this year. The flow of water is obstructed due to siltation in the main stream of river water. This causes water to seep into the orchards and houses along the river and cause damage. A similar situation arose last year. This has caused losses of crores of rupees in the past.
Explaining the main reasons behind this flood, it was clarified that the flood was due to siltation. Due to this, there was a demand for continuous sludge removal. Meanwhile, officials of valpoi Irrigation Department contacted the area and said that instructions were given by Chief Engineer Pramod Badami. After the submission of the proposal in that regard, all the problems that hinder the flow of water have been removed.
This work is currently being completed. Because the rains are going to start in two more days. It is not possible to say when the rivers will overflow. He said that due to this, care has been taken in this regard and emphasis has been laid on removing all kinds of problems in the river basin.
Irrigation department has also set up a system to monitor the floods in the coming monsoon. The river water level will be constantly monitored and special care will be taken to avoid any serious situation. For this, the staff of the Irrigation Department has been appointed to monitor the rivers 24 hours a day.
