The Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai has banked on Goa University's own faculty pool for the choice of next vice-chancellor and picked Dr Harilal B Menon.
Menon is a professor in Marine Sciences and the current Dean of the University's Marine Science Department. He earned his doctorate from the Cochin University of Science and Technology and has research interests in marine optics and remote sensing.
In the hunt for the new vice-chancellor the three-member Search Committee had zeroed in on five names from a pool of 25 they had in June shortlisted from among 260 applicants. The list of five was submitted to Pillai earlier this week in a sealed envelope.
Prof Malapati K Janarthanam was appointed officiating Vice-Chancellor on an acting basis ever since the outgoing V-C Varun Sahni ended his term on August 18.
Menon will have a five-year term as vice-chancellor.
The three-member selection committee comprised CSIR director general Dr Shekar Mande, former NCERT director Jagmohan Singh Rajput and Dr Satish Reddy of DRDO.
