Duler Parish holds awareness programme on mental health

Mental health took the spotlight at the Parish of St Francis Xavier in Duler, as the Family Apostolate Cell and the Social Apostolate Cell organised an awareness programme on the occasion of Diocesan Health Apostolate Sunday.

The event, facilitated by psychologist and counsellor Ketaki Parob Gadekar, aimed at shedding light on the importance of open dialogue surrounding mental well-being.

Nearly 200 participants spanning multiple age groups participated in the three-hour programme. Gadekar who was accompanied by her team of students-in-training, presented the audience with insightful discussions, relatable anecdotes, and interactive exercises.

Her students also shared their personal experiences with mental health challenges, providing a poignant and inspiring touch to the session.

A particularly noteworthy aspect of the programme was the confidential question and answer session, where attendees could scan a code and anonymously type in their queries and concerns regarding mental health issues in their daily lives.

While the organisers read out more than 40 questions, Gadekar and her team addressed each query, while also busting myths and clarifying misconceptions about counselling and mental health care.

She also emphasised the critical differences between counsellors and psychiatrists and outlined key ‘red flags’ that indicate the need for professional intervention.

Many participants sought future sessions tailored to specific age groups, highlighting the necessity for sustained conversations around mental health. The Parish of St Francis Xavier at Duler has embraced this challenge wholeheartedly.

Committed to its vision of building a community of faith, hope, and love, the Parish sees this initiative as just one step towards its vision of extending hope and support to those in need. Encouraged by the success of this programme, the parish intends to organise more such events, ensuring that mental health awareness remains a priority.
