The entry of sensational Fadista SoniaShirsat onto the professional tiatr stage in Sammy Tavares’ tiatr ‘ApleamBhurgeum Sangatak’ is surely a defining and glorious moment for tiatr. From theinternational Fado stage and performances at starred hotels and special eliteaudience globally, stepping on fearlessly to the humble tiatr stage is acourageous and bold decision on Sonia’s part.

Sonia Shirsat though, is not new to Konkani music. She performed at many musicalshows where Konkani was the language of the hour. She has also sung for severalKonkani albums in the past. However she was actually one step away fromofficially embracing the Konkani Tiatr stage in totality until she made her debutin ‘Apleam Bhurguem Sangatak’. Credit goes to Sammy Tavares for giving her theoffer to be a part of his troupe.

When prodded to know how she feels being a part of the Tiatrist fraternity, ina down to earth manner she retorted “It’s a nice feeling, though it’s anentirely different game, there is much to
learn from this form of entertainment which has a mass following. I am amazedby the response of the people for tiatrs and the way all shows get a fullaudience. Tiatr lovers shower lots of love and affection on performers.”

The presence of Sonia Shirsat on the tiatr stage has certainly brought a smileto thousands of tiatr fans, but the million dollar question is, whether she willcontinue with other playwrights or producers if given a second chance. This iswhat Sonia Shirsat had to say to The Goan when asked to shed light on herfuture plans for the tiatr stage. “I am overwhelmed at the acceptance andresponse of the tiatr audience and would love to continue working in tiatr, provided I can manage the time slots with my other engagements.”

The Konkani Tiatr stage provides ample space for any talented artist to displayhis or her talent and win the hearts of the audience. Sonia Shirsat’scontinuation on the Konkani Tiatr stage will have a more than just one benefit. Not only will it enhance the performing art, but it will also attract thecollege youth who aspire to share that stage.
