Ex MLA from Goa collapses after slap by driver, dies in hospital in Belagavi

PANAJI: Former Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) MLA Lavoo Mamledar passed away following an altercation with a rickshaw driver, in Khade Bazar in Belagavi today afternoon. 

Police have registered a murder case against rickshaw driver Mukaheed Shakeel Jamadar, who is already taken into custody.

Mamledar (68), was a former MLA from Goa's Ponda assembly constituency. He was also a retired DySP in the Goa police force. 

According to police between 1 and 1:30 pm, an altercation took place between Mamledar and the driver, wherein the driver assaulted the former.

After which, Mamledar collapsed inside a hotel lobby from where he was rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead by the doctors. 

Speaking on the incident Belagavi DCP (Law and Order) Rohan Jagdish said, "The accused slapped the ex-MLA, after which he started climbing the stairs of Srinivas Lodge. He collapsed in the reception area and was taken to the hospital, where he was declared dead after medical tests, including an ECG".

Jagdish said that further investigation is ongoing, and police are gathering all details about the accused.

Meanwhile, Goa DGP Alok Kumar stated, "We are closely coordinating with our counterparts in Belagavi for an early autopsy and to release the body to the family."  

Mamledar’s family members have rushed to Belagavi.
