BELAGAVI
Trading activities at the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) market yard here were disrupted for a couple of hours after protesting farmers locked the gate on Monday afternoon. The market yard supplies vegetables to Goa.
Angry farmers staged protests and disrupted activities at the market yard to demand the shifting back of the wholesale vegetable market from the private Jai Kisan Market.
A large number of farmers from the vegetable growing areas of Belagavi, Bagewadi, Gokak, Hukkeri and other areas took part in the agitation. The gate was opened after over two hours following police intervention.
President of the farmers association Chunappa Pujari said since the wholesale vegetable market that was functioning from the Market Yard on the APMC Road was shifted to Jai Kisan Market at Gandhinagar, a private market by local wholesalers association, farmers are being cheated randomly.
“Our agitation will be intensified in case the wholesale vegetable market is not shifted back to the APMC Market Yard. We also demand action against the Deputy Director of Agriculture for permitting the private wholesale vegetable market,” Pujari said.
