FDA raids: Mapusa bus stand hub for transportation of adulterated food items

Mapusa: As part of its continuation drive against adulterated and unlicensed food products, the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) today seized several food items, including bread used for making Shawarma that had no manufacturing date and fennel seeds suspected to be adulterated during a raid at Mapusa bus stand.

The total value of the seized items is estimated at ₹70,000 and the same was seized from a Pune interstate bus.

The incident has raised concerns as the Mapusa bus stand has become a hub for transportation and the sale of adulterated food. Nearly half a dozen raids have taken place in the last few weeks.

In July, the FDA sleuths seized kgs of degraded paneer and curd, along with 50 kgs of fried onions, valued at around Rs 1.5 lakh.

Whereas in August, Rs one lakh worth products including spices, goat milk and biscuits were seized for lacking proper labeling.

Officials have expressed concerns over the poor quality and safety standards of these products, which pose health risks to consumers.

The absence of manufacturing dates and suspected adulteration of common ingredients like fennel seeds raises serious concerns about food safety and quality.

Authorities are continuing their investigation to trace the suppliers of these products and determine the extent of the adulteration. Further actions are expected to be taken against those responsible. The FDA has urged the public to be cautious about where they purchase food and to report any suspicious or unsafe food items.
