Festive rush turns Anjuna-Vagator into traffic nightmare for residents

Chaotic traffic has overwhelmed the internal roads of Anjuna and Vagator over the past several days.

As the New Year festivities reach their peak, residents of Anjuna and Vagator find themselves grappling with not only the menace of loud music but also relentless traffic jams that clog the narrow village roads.

The influx of tourists, particularly after-night partygoers, has turned these serene coastal villages into chaotic zones, with long queues of two-wheelers and cars attempting to navigate the cramped lanes.

The situation has left locals frustrated and questioning the authorities’ ability to resolve these recurring issues.

“There is so much traffic that the road in front of my house gets blocked. I can’t even park my own vehicle in my compound. It’s a big nuisance during this time of the year,” lamented Agnes Monteiro, a resident of Anjuna.

Tourist surge overwhelms infrastructure

While the Christmas week saw fewer visitors than anticipated, the run-up to New Year’s Eve has brought a sharp surge in tourist numbers, predominantly domestic travellers.

This influx has overwhelmed the already strained infrastructure of the village.

“In November and up to mid-December, the numbers were low, but now there’s a sudden rush,” Monteiro noted.

“The rush will last for a week or so, but it’s already causing havoc,” she added.

After 8 pm, the internal roads become gridlocked, with the chaos intensifying post-10 pm when partygoers from the electronic dance music (EDM) festival make their way to popular nightlife spots in the area.

“The Chapora lane is particularly bad, with bumper-to-bumper traffic creating madness on the streets,” said Jawish Moniz, a resident of Vagator.

Ineffective traffic management

Despite the presence of traffic police at key points, managing the vehicular surge has proven challenging.

“We do our best to manage the traffic, but the sudden surge makes it almost impossible to control,” admitted a traffic officer on duty.

Residents say the situation has made everyday life difficult, particularly for those requiring access to emergency services.

“The roads are completely blocked, and it becomes a nightmare if there’s an emergency,” a resident said.

A persistent problem

The issue of traffic congestion during the holiday season is not new to Anjuna-Vagator, but the lack of effective solutions has left locals exasperated.

Many question why authorities have failed to find a long-term resolution to this perennial problem.

As the festive season continues, the chaos on the roads and the relentless noise pollution highlight the need for stricter regulations and better infrastructure planning to balance tourism and residents’ quality of life.
