MARGAO
Finally, work on the repair and maintenance of the Margao Civil and Criminal Court building has started in right earnest, with the contractor getting down to the job.
The contractor has three months at his disposal to complete the repair and maintenance work from October 18, 2022, the day the PWD issued the work order.
Estimated to cost around Rs 67 lakh, the repair would include the replacement of the damaged rafters and the roof tiles. The false ceiling would also be replaced as per the scope of the work.
The internal portion of the building will get a fresh coat of paint as well.
PWD officials informed that the repair work on the heritage building housing the Margao Civil and Criminal Courts has commenced in right earnest. A look at the building revealed that the roof tiles have been removed and the workers have taken up the work of replacing the damaged rafters.
The court building was in the news during the monsoons when water seepage was the order of the day, prompting city-based lawyers to stay out of the complex to draw the attention of the government.
Law Minister Nilesh Cabral, who had rushed to Margao to soothe ruffled feathers, had assured to take up the repair work on top priority.
The matter later came under the radar of the High Court following a petition filed by the South Goa Advocates Association.
At the last date of the hearing, the High Court had set a three-month deadline for the contractor to complete the work, beginning with the issuance of a work order on October 18.
A senior PWD official said the department is closely monitoring the work, pointing out that all efforts would be made to complete the work by January end.
