MARGAO
The 40-foot Christmas tree at the Margao Communidade square, put up by city-based Ulhas Jewellers, which has been the centre of attraction in the heart of the commercial capital, was engulfed by a minor fire on Wednesday evening.
The incident occurred at around 9.30 pm when the top portion of the Christmas tree caught fire. As the fire caught the attention of passers-by, the Margao fire brigade was informed about the incident.
The fire was immediately brought under control by the fire brigade before any major damage could be caused to the Christmas tree. Though the exact cause of the fire is not known, a short circuit is suspected to be the cause of the incident.
The security personnel immediately disconnected the power supply to the tree as a precautionary measure.
