The Goa Coast Guard has successfully brought a fire on the container ship MV Maersk Frankfurt under control. On Sunday, Goa Coast Guard DIG Manoj Bhatia informed reporters that the situation was stable, with no immediate threat to the remaining crew members on board.
“The firefighting operation is still ongoing, but the fire is well under control. We have three ships in the area, and we are conducting regular air sorties to spray dry chemical powder, which has significantly controlled the fire. Since the fire is in the containers, it may take more time to fully extinguish. Unfortunately, one crew member has been reported dead, but there is no immediate danger to the remaining crew,” said Bhatia.
Bhatia added that the Coast Guard has strategically positioned the vessel slightly away from the coast and advised state agencies to prepare for any oil pollution contingencies. “Given our past experiences, this could have been a major tragedy, especially since the vessel is carrying some dangerous cargo. Although the fire is not in that particular section, it could have resulted in a major disaster if the Coast Guard had not reacted swiftly. As of now, the situation is under control. There is no oil pollution or significant damage to the ship, despite the containers on fire,” he said.
The firefighting efforts have now entered their third day. “We have four ships involved in the operation, and one more ship will join by evening to support our efforts. Additionally, two Dornier flights and Advanced Light Helicopters are actively involved. Our officers from various regions are working together, with everything monitored centrally by Coast Guard HQ in Delhi and Mumbai. Our ships are well-equipped with resources for fighting external fires, and our trained manpower is fully prepared for such emergencies,” Bhatia explained.
Bhatia praised the coordinated efforts of the Coast Guard in averting what could have been a major disaster. “Our ships and crew are equipped with the necessary tools and training to handle such situations. The prompt action taken by the Coast Guard has prevented a potentially catastrophic event,” he said.
