PANAJI: The 21st Livestock Census that commenced in Goa today is the first of its kind conducted digitally.
Minister for Animal Husbandry Nilkant Halarnkar said that the census will cover 16 different species and 221 breeds, including cattle, buffaloes, goats, pigs, poultry, and more.
This year, for the first time, the census will include breed-wise data on pet dogs, he said.
" For the first time, data will be collected digitally, making the process more efficient and accurate," the Minister said.
Halarnkar explained that the officials will visit every household to collect information on livestock and pets.
Halarnkar said that this breed-wise data will help the state identify the types of dogs present and assess the need for measures like banning certain breeds.
The Livestock Census is conducted every five years across India. It is the main source of data on the number, breed, age, and gender of various animals.
This data is crucial for planning and improving the livestock sector, which is a major source of income and employment, particularly in rural areas. The census also helps with animal health monitoring, disease control, and understanding breed dynamics.
The data will also assist in creating better policies for animal welfare and public safety.
The Minister has urged residents to cooperate with the census workers, who will be visiting homes to gather information.
