MARGAO
Dry fish lovers may have to travel to the coastal village of Colva to pick-up their requirements for the ensuing monsoon season.
The traditional fishermen from Colva have decided to sell their dry fish at the Colva beach itself instead of Margao during the annual Purumentachem fest fair.
MMC Chief Officer, Agnelo Fernandes, said since neither the traditional fishermen nor any other vendor has approached the civic body for permission to sell goods at the Purumentachem fair, there’s no question of exempting the traditional fair at the Old Market this year.
“Since the vendors have not shown interest in selling their traditional food items at the fair, there’s no question of granting any permission to anyone at the old market, the venue of the annual Purumentachem fair,” he said.
A visit to Colva on Friday revealed that the fishermen engaged in drying fish have decided to sell the fish in the village in view of the Covid scenario prevailing everywhere.
With no public transport available in view of the lockdown and the government extending the lockdown till May 30, the fishermen from Colva have decided not to come to the Old market this year during the Purumentachem fest.
A fisherman Anthony D’Silva pointed out that most of the fishermen engaged in drying fish have decided to sell dry fish in the village itself. “There’s no public transport available in view of Covid. Moreover, we have seen police cracking a whip in the markets. Such a scenario would only cause inconvenience to the fishermen to transport the fish from Colva to Margao and back,” he added.
