Benaulim-based fisherman Pele Fernandes did it again on the sandy beach stretch for what he is famous for – rescuing endangered species and preserving the marine environment.

The fishermen were about to set sail for fishing on early Thursday when they spotted dogs and crows pulling a damaged net on the shore. Out of curiosity, Pele and his team rushed towards the object only to find baby Olive Ridley turtles struggling as they were entangled in the damaged net and were facing risk from the canines and crows.

After bringing the hatchlings on the shore, the team went about rescuing the baby turtles one by one. It was only after the last of the baby turtle were rescued that Pele along with another fishermen released them in the shallow waters.

Sending a message on preserving the endangered marine species, Pele made a strong case before the government to put an end to marine pollution. Reminding that attempts are being to make Goa a coal hub, Pele warned that the Coal hub will devastate the fishing activity as the coal handling will contaminate the waters and threaten the marine life. “Hope better sense prevails and the people live a peaceful life, free from coal pollution”, he added.
