As Goa observes State Road Safety Week, five road accidents were reported across State in less than 24 hours.

This spike in incidents comes just a day after Chief Minister Pramod Sawant raised alarm over rising road accidents and its related fatalities, cautioning citizens as “Bhivpachi Garaz Asa”.

In a self-accident reported this morning on the Old Goa highway, a car driver, while trying to avoid a pedestrian crossing, lost control and rammed into the footpath. The driver sustained minor injuries in the crash.

In another incident, an interstate bus veered off National Highway 66 near Padi, Canacona, crashing into a tree. Both the driver and a passenger suffered injuries and were shifted to South Goa District Hospital for treatment.

In the wee hours of Tuesday, a four-wheeler lost control and hit an electricity pole at the Farmagudi-Dhavli flyover. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Similarly, in Pernem, a car and a bike collided with an electricity pole at Aroba-Tuem while attempting to avoid each other. The bike rider and pillion were injured in the accident.

In a separate incident last night, a BMW car was engulfed in flames near Davorlim Church. Fortunately, all occupants escaped without injuries.

Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho yesterday stated that the government plans to install night vision cameras statewide to enhance road safety.
