The Global Konknni Forum on Tuesday submitted the draft Amendment Bill to Navelim BJP MLA Ulhas Tuenkar to support the cause of Roman script by amending the Official Language Act to accord equal status for Konkani in Roman script.

The Navelim MLA accepted the draft Bill as well as the resolution drafted by the Forum seeking introduction of Roman Konkani in the schools in a phased manner, and promised to forward the petition to the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant for further action.

Saying that Konkani and Marathi language has been resolved long ago, the Navelim MLA, however, said he would convey the sentiments of the Global Konknni Forum to the Chief Minister for necessary action. “I have expressed my support to the Forum to convey and forward their representation on the subjection to the Chief Minister. The issue of Konkani and Marathi was long resolved. Since they have submitted the representation, the same will be forwarded to the Chief Minister,” he said.

The Global Konknni Forum led by president Kennedy Afonso, Secretary Jose Salvador Fernandes and others had sought an appointment with the Navelim MLA as part of their ongoing exercise “Amdarak Bhett – Kodel Zay vo Romi Lipi Zai? As part the exercise, the Forum has submitted the draft Amendment Bill and the resolution to the MLAs, beginning with Curtorim Independent MLA Reginaldo Lourenco, besides Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira.

Kennedy has expressed his happiness with the positive and constructive interaction with the Navelim MLA, saying the forum is sure that Tuenkar will certainly pass the Bill and the resolution in the House.
