A fishing boat carrying four persons capsized in the Chapora river on Thursday morning, but all aboard were fortunately rescued.

The boat, which had been returning from a fishing expedition in the sea, met with the mishap around 1.5 kms from the Chapora jetty at approximately 10 am.

As the boat began to capsize, the four on board jumped into the water. Nearby trawler workers from another fishing boat rushed to their aid and successfully rescued all four.

The individuals rescued have been identified as boat owner Chudgo Gaonkar (68) from Chapora, Krishna Gaonkar (40), Dasram (22), and Sandeep (21).

The boat owner, Chudgo Gaonkar, reported feeling unwell after the incident and was admitted to the nearest Primary Health Centre for treatment. He was later discharged after receiving medical care.

The accident resulted in significant financial loss, with damage to the fibre boat, nets, motor, and other accessories estimated at approximately Rs 12 lakh.

Upon receiving news of the incident, Chapora Coastal Police Inspector Gaurish Malik and Mapusa Fire Brigade Officer Ganesh Gawkar rushed to the scene to assess the situation and conduct inspections.

In response to the incident, Balbhim Malvankar, President of the Chapora Boat Owners Association, has called on the government to provide compensation to the affected boat owner, so he can resume his livelihood.

"The loss is substantial, and the government should step in to ensure these fishermen can get back on their feet and continue their work," said Malvankar.
