In the scenic village of Agassaim, a man has become synonymous with festive lights and stars. Anthony Rodrigues, popularly known as the ‘Star Man of Goa,’ has been creating an awe-inspiring spectacle for over two decades.

But this year, apart from the stars, he has something new and unique -- a life-size sculpture of St Francis Xavier in a boat, surrounded by a scene from his life.

In conversation with The Goan, Rodrigues shares his journey, which started in his childhood.

“When I was a kid, I used to buy stars from the market and hang them outside my house for the festive season. But over the years, I started making them myself using bamboo,” he said. Initially, his friends encouraged him to stop buying and start making his own, which sparked his passion for star-making.

This year, Rodrigues has outdone himself, with more than 900 stars adorning his home and property, the star display has grown bigger. The exact number of stars, however, remains a mystery. "We have a special challenge this year," he explained. “Whoever can guess the number of stars will win a cash prize of Rs 60,000, sponsored by a well-wisher.”

Rodrigues began his work in June, creating and assembling the stars. “Last year, I had over 800 stars, and this year, it’s more than 900. But I can’t give an exact number yet,” he said, smiling. The process is time-consuming, and it’s not unusual for Rodrigues to work late into the night. He recalled waking up as early as 3 am on many occasions to work on the intricate designs. “My wife and I do this together. It’s a labour of love,” he said.

While the stars have always been the main attraction, this year’s exhibit has something new and unique -- a life-size sculpture of St Francis Xavier in a boat, surrounded by a scene from his life. The boat, featuring St Francis Xavier and a crab with a cross in its claws, is a tribute to Goa’s beloved patron saint, known locally as “Goencho Saib.” The exhibit draws inspiration from the ongoing Exposition, a key event for the Catholic community in Goa.

Rodrigues explained the inspiration behind the boat display. “This year, I wanted to do something different. I had a discussion with my wife, and she asked me if I could do something related to the SFX Exposition. I wasn’t sure at first, but then one night I had a dream,” he recalled. "In the dream, St Francis Xavier appeared to me and guided me to build the boat. The dream gave me the confidence to go ahead with the idea."

The life-size sculpture of St Xavier in a boat is an artistic depiction of the saint’s journey and his connection with the people of Goa. It shows the saint surrounded by followers, with a crab holding a cross, symbolizing a miraculous event from his life. “The boat represents unity and faith, both of which are central to the spirit of Goa,” Rodrigues said.

This year’s exhibition will remain open to the public until January 7, 2025.

Despite the hard work, Rodrigues remains grateful for the support he has received from his friends, family, and well-wishers over the years. “Without their support, this wouldn’t be possible,” he said. "It’s not just about the stars; it’s about showing the unity and faith that Goa holds dear."
