VASCO: A major fuel pipeline supplying fuel from Mormugao Port to Zuari IAV Private Limited’s depot was damaged during excavation work by an NHAI contractor at Dabolim Junction on Friday. Quick intervention prevented a disaster, as no fuel was being pumped at the time.
Emergency teams, including fire brigade units, ambulances, and police, were deployed immediately. Traffic was diverted, causing congestion on the busy highway.
Zuari IAV Terminal Manager Shriprasad Nayak confirmed the damage, stating, “Fortunately, a major disaster was averted as no fuel was being pumped. The idle pipeline was filled with air, which helped us detect the exact location of the damage.” He warned of the risks involved in excavation near fuel pipelines, adding, “Had this happened during fuel transfer, it could have been catastrophic. Despite repeated warnings, such incidents continue to occur.”
Nayak also revealed that excavation work dangerously close to the pipeline had to be halted earlier this week with police intervention. “Just two days ago, we had to call the police to stop the contractor’s team from digging while fuel was being pumped,” he said.
Repairs are expected to take four days, though fuel stocks remain sufficient for ten days. Vasco Police Inspector Kapil Nayak stated that there is no major threat at the moment. “Authorities are present, and all necessary precautions are being taken,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mormugao Mamlatdar Pravinjay Pandit added, “We have obtained a written assurance from Zuari IAV that the repair work poses no danger to residents or commuters.”
A meeting is planned with the contractor to ensure better coordination and prevent future mishaps
