Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) Nitin Gadkari on Sunday announced the sanctioning of Rs 1,376 crore for the four-laning of a 22-kilometre stretch between Bendurdem (Quepem) and Polem (Canacona) of the NH66.
Gadkari took to X to announce the financial sanction for the project, which, according to him, forms an integral part of the Mumbai-to-Kanyakumari four-lane corridor and constitutes a pivotal route for South Goa.
Last month, the Ministry had invited a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the four-laning of Benordem–start of Canacona Manohar Parrikar Road (MPCBR) and from MPCBR to Polem on Hybrid Annuity Mode.
“In Goa, we have sanctioned Rs 1,376 crore for the four-laning of a 22.10 km stretch on NH 66, encompassing the segment from Bendurdem to the commencement of the Canacona bypass and from the end of the bypass to the Karnataka border at Polem,” Gadkari said.
“It serves as a crucial artery connecting the towns of Margao, Cuncolim and Canacona and significantly enhances the State’s overall connectivity,” he added.
The Union Minister said that traversing the villages of Bendurdem, Cordem, Barcem and Canacona, this stretch is indispensable for facilitating inter-state traffic with Karnataka and Maharashtra while also improving intra-State connectivity to key towns such as Panaji and Margao.
“The development will alleviate congestion, enhance traffic flow and address critical accident-prone zones in the region,” Gadkari said.
