MARGAO
A day after resolving the gangrape of a mentally challenged woman at Cansaulim, the Fatorda police has moved the Tourism Department for the cancellation of the tourism licence of the guest house at Cansaulim where the victim was sexually assaulted by the five accused persons.

Investigating officer, Fatorda police station in-charge, PI Nathan Almeida informed that the police has recommended to the Tourism Department for the cancellation of the trade licence of the guest house at Cansaulim which was used for the commission of the crime against the woman.

PI Almeida has further pointed out that the police have recommended the cancellation of the licence of the rent-a-cab vehicle, which was used for the transportation of the victim. The police have sought the cancellation of the rent-a-cab licence of the vehicle through the Regional Transport Office, Panaji.

Meanwhile, investigations in the gangrape have revealed after the mentally challenged woman left her residence at Quepem, she landed at the Margao KTC bus stand. Police said that the accused, who befriended the woman, before abducting her to Vasco, was waiting at the Margao bus stand to catch the bus for Vasco. “Adil had come to Margao for some work. When he was at the KTC bus stand to catch his bus to Vasco, he allegedly befriended the woman before abducting her to Vasco before the four others took her to the guest house and gangraped her,” the police said.

Meanwhile, women’s right activist Auda Viegas has made a host of suggestions to the Goa police to ensure the safety of lone women, who are compelled by circumstances beyond their control to walk on the streets, bus stops or the railway stations.

Complimenting the police teams involved in resolving the gangrape, Viegas sought to know whether the police stations have patrol vehicles be they the Pink Force or local police stations that keep watch over such places to prevent such cases especially at night.

“Our aim should be a monitoring system to prevent crime. We need to devise safety measures as this gangrape is an eye opener to the murderous intentions of the rapists. The punishment should act as a deterrent to those who indulge in such crime,” she said in her letter to the district police Chief, SP Sunita Sawant.

She also demanded that the owner of the flat needs to be investigated and the flat sealed for permitting such criminal activity by the owner.
