GEC to assess Goa’s water needs until 2047

Projected requirement is 31.64 TMC: Economic Survey

The State government has roped in Goa Engineering College to assess the water needs and resources of Goa up to 2047.

According to the government, the projected requirement is 31.64 TMC of water.

As per the Economic Survey 2024-25, the Government, under the National Water Mission, in partnership with Goa Engineering College, is assessing water needs and resources up to 2047.

“The projected requirement is 31.64 TMC, serving as a roadmap for sustainable water resource planning and development up to 2047,” it said.

The government said that the water availability, in both quality and quantity, is vital for sustainable development and the Prime Minister’s National Water Mission aim is to ensure Water, Food, and Health Security.

To support this mission, the Department undertook 15 Capital Incentive Projects between 2019-2020 and 2024-2025, with a planned investment of Rs 1,280 crore to harvest 240 MCM (600 MLD) of water.

Of the 15 planned projects, four have been successfully completed, costing Rs 430 crore and yielding 75 MCM of water. The remaining 11 projects, which are 50 per cent complete at a cost of Rs 480 crore, are projected to cost Rs 800 crore and produce 165 MCM of water.
