In a bid to make surgeries available in rural areas, the State government will offer minor surgeries at the Valpoi Community Health Centre (CHC) on a trial basis from June 22.

Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Thursday inaugurated the surgery ward at the Valpoi CHC.

Aware that patients from rural areas have faced difficulties in reaching the GMC hospital, Rane said the health department decided to set up surgery ward in the Valpoi CHC from June 22.

Addressing a gathering to inaugurate the Satellite OPDs at the Valpoi CHC, Rane clarified that the surgeries would be conducted on a trial basis.

“We will monitor the treatment and facilities to patients and if this trial is successful, we intend to provide better facilities in other health centres in the State.

Inaugurating the Satellite OPDs at the Valpoi CHC, Rane said the OPDs will be open every Wednesday from 9 am to 5 pm and will provide OPD services for the departments of General Medicine, Surgery, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, and Gynaecology.

“If the specialist doctor recommends it, minor surgeries will also be performed at CHC Valpoi. Patients who require additional assistance will be referred to GMC and given a referral card indicating the priority of treatment at GMC,” said Rane.

GMC Dean Dr Shivanand Bandekar said a specialist doctor from GMC would visit the Valpoi CHC every Wednesday and conduct tests on patients. He informed that health cards for these tests would be given priority at GMC for further treatment and he appealed to people to cooperate in the success of this trial.

Speaking at the occasion, Dr Kakodkar said the health department had decided to implement this trial to provide better facilities to people in the State.

“The health department and GMC will work jointly in this regard,” said Dr Kakodkar.

Valpoi Municipal Council Chairperson Sehzain Sheikh lauded the government for providing surgery facilities to people in Valpoi.

Others present at the function included CHC Chief Medical Officer Dr Abhijeet Wadkar, Dr Kalpana Mahatme, and former director of health services Dr Rajnanda Desai.
