The Goa Medical College (GMC) is contemplating starting two new post-graduate courses – in Oncology and Psychiatric Medicine – and will soon apply to Goa University for permission.
This was announced by GMC Dean, Dr Shivanand Bandekar, while addressing students and faculty at the College’s annual scientific meet – Scientifica.
Bandekar said that once the formalities are completed and the PG course is launched, it will further enhance the stature of the institution.
Bandekar had also spoken of the State’s premier medical institution’s plans to start a specially designed PG course in general medicine, which will help revive the dying tradition of ‘family physicians’.
He had mentioned the need to revive the tradition, which he said helps reduce the burden on the tertiary healthcare system in a situation where people are forced to rush directly to hospitals for even minor ailments, which otherwise would have been diagnosed and treated by the ‘family physician’.
The GMC currently offers 29 post-graduate courses – 16 specialisations in MD, three Master of Surgery courses in anatomy, ophthalmology, and otolaryngology, in addition to eight PG diploma courses and two master’s courses in allied health sciences.
