Panaji: Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) to establish Centre of Excellence for Skull Base Surgery in early 2025, offering world class, life-saving treatments for complex cranial and nasal disorders.

Addressing a press conference, GMC Dean Dr Shivanand Bandekar announced that the brain tumour surgery costing upto Rs 10 lakh will be made available free at GMC.

Bandekar said that the Skull base surgery is a minimally invasive specialized type of surgery that focuses on treating conditions at the base of the skull.

Bandekar said that Centre will address complex skull base disorders and is a huge step forward for healthcare in Goa, with experts like Dr. Nishit Shah and Dr. Amin Kassam leading the way.

The new facility will focus on treating critical conditions such as optic nerve injuries, cerebrospinal fluid leaks, and skull base tumours, which are difficult to access surgically.

The Centre will be located at GMC’s Super Speciality Block at a cost of Rs 10 crore investment in state-of-the-art equipment.

“This is a milestone in the history of Goa Medical College. With this facility, we can offer treatments that were previously unavailable in the region,” said Dr. Bandekar. "This centre will allow us to treat complex cases previously requiring patients to travel outside Goa," he added.

The facility will cater to intricate surgeries such as pituitary tumour removal and optic nerve repairs. "This will be a game-changer for the people of Goa, offering advanced treatments at no cost," added Dr. Bandekar.
