The first community seed bank of Goa was inaugurated on Wednesday at the hands of Dr Vandana Shiva, author and sovereignty advocate at Cutorim, with the environmentalist giving a call for the creation of a new economy for seed food agriculture in the country.  

The community seed bank of Goa was launched by Dr. Vandana in the presence of Environment Minister Nilesh Cabral, Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco, Goa State Biodiversity Member Secretary Pradip Sarmokadam, Curtorim Bio-diversity Management Chairman J Santan Rodrigues, Zilla member Michele Rebello and Sarpanch Caetano Hilario at the Curtorim panchayat hall.  

In her address, Dr. Vandana said the initiative to create banks has now resulted in the creation of around 150 community seed banks across the country. She has called for efforts to make sure that to preserve heritage of biodiversity in agriculture, heritage of cultural diversity and heritage of eating continues forever in the future.  

In his address, Environment Minister Nilesh Cabral said a seed bank will be created in the office of the state Bio-diversity committee. He also lauded the efforts of the Curtorim Biodiversity committee for its efforts to preserve the natural lakes, bio-diversity and heritage of the village.
